SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME

Theme & Objectives

The European Congress on Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis is a unique opportunity for clinicians and researchers from around the world to participate in the premiere meeting of 2011 in the field of osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. The Congress will offer an overview of the most recent developments and cutting-edge research in the pathophysiology, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and osteoarthritis, as well as policy-related issues such as health economics. The Congress also provides a forum for stimulating interaction, not just for research specialists, but also for practitioners and other health professionals who can profit from the exchange of information provided in numerous Meet-The-Expert sessions.

Target Audience

The scope of the Congress covers all aspects of osteoporosis and related bone diseases. Participants will include rheumatologists, gynaecologists, endocrinologists, internal medicine specialists, orthopaedic surgeons, radiologists, nurses, rehabilitation professionals, public health personnel, epidemiologists, pharmacists, and pharmaceutical industry representatives.

Plenary Sessions

There will be eight plenary lectures. Each session will be dedicated to a single theme and will feature an invited speaker along with oral communications selected from submitted abstracts.
The following topics and respective speakers are planned and confirmed:

  • Non invasive evaluation of bone strenght – R. Muller
  • Pathophysiological basis of bisphosphonate side effects: ONJ and stress fracture – J. Compston
  • Osteoporosis treatments and fracture healing – J. Goldhahn
  • Osteoporosis and burden of diseases – N. Freemantle
  • Epidemiology and outcome of lower limb osteoarthritis and arthroplasty - C. Cooper
  • Sarcopenia and frailty - W. Evans
  • Emergent therapies in osteoporosis – S. Papapoulos

Poster Sessions

All submitted abstracts not scheduled for oral presentation will be eligible for poster presentation.

Meet-The-Expert Sessions

Each day specialists will lead exchanges on 12 key topics. Small groups, on a first come first served basis, will be encouraged to not only ask questions but to also provide feedback about their own experiences. The following topics and respective speakers are planned and confirmed:

CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION CREDITS

Participants are eligible for 30 continuing medical education (CME) credits awarded by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME).

The EACCME is an institution of the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS). EACCME credits are recognized by the American Medical Association towards the Physicians’ Recognition Award (PRA).
